LUMotorsport on a High at Formula Student UK

It is always great to catch up with our Formula Student teams after the all the hard work and the dust has settled on another season.

The Formula Student competition is one of the most challenging experiences for the engineers of the future and anything can happen as we appreciated when
Loughborough University Motorsport got in touch to thank us for our support and give us this 2018/2019 - Season Review.

The 2018-2019 Season

The 2019 car, LFS19, built upon the major design changes made during the previous season. Sticking with the 10” wheels, the team focused on improving the overall drivability of the vehicle by developing the driver controls, as well as making changes to the aerodynamics package and integration of the electronics.

Our first event of the season was Formula Student UK at Silverstone, where the car put in a very strong performance. It finished:

• 5th in Skidpad • 21st in Acceleration • 13th in Autocross • 4th in Endurance

Initially, the team finished in 9th place, however after the points were recalculated the team were informed that we had actually finished 4th, our highest finishing position ever. During the Endurance event we also won the ‘Top Individual Driver’ award again.

Formula Student Austria

After the UK event had concluded, the team set off to Formula Student Austria and we were looking forward to taking part at the Red Bull Ring after such a successful result in Silverstone. During scrutineering, a small fuel leak was found during the tilt test, delaying the team.

The team managed to solve this issue overnight, completing scrutineering and still managing to take part in both acceleration and skidpad all in one morning. Overall, the team managed to compete in all dynamic events, finishing 20th out of 34 teams as well as being top UK team.

Best Year Ever

This year, sponsorship and internal funding enabled the team to carry out two weeks of testing before events. During this testing, we managed to cover just over 300km, the most ever by the LUMotorsport team. This additional testing not only helped improve the vehicle’s reliability, but also allowed the team to focus on performance testing, making setup changes at the track.

We look forward to your continued support next year as we start work on the 2020 car, LFS20.

An exciting and accomplished season - #SPALcoolingfans happy to support one of the Formula Student regulars and top performers.
