Virtual Formula Student is a Success

SPAL had a great time being a spectator at the first ever virtual format Formula Student competition #FS2020, specially adapted for the pandemic. As the organisers described, the 80 teams that took part showed a great deal of grit and determination switching their efforts from real life to video presentations and online Q & A sessions which required just as much detailed analysis and input from the judges to evaluate them.

Although the chanting and applause and physical presentation of the trophies had to be foregone, there was definitely a buzz across cyberspace surrounding this year’s event.

One of the teams SPAL supports, Oxford Brookes Racing sent us the following report on how it was for them:

To our loyal partners and supporters of Oxford Brookes Racing

With the shift to electric vehicles, OBR19 took the opportunity to enter a concept class for the 2019 Formula Student Events, preparing OBR20 in terms of the initial design. The OBR20 vehicle we intended to take to FSUK would have been our first EV in the flesh had it not been for COVID-19. The 2019/20 team has worked extremely hard to place OBR in the best possible position to tackle the new challenges of EV.

Notwithstanding, we are proud to have had the opportunity to test the designs of OBR20 at the Virtual FSUK Competition and are pleased to share with you the results below.

Virtual Formula Student UK Results

• 5th Overall in Statics • 3rd Overall in Virtual Dynamics

If there was an overall category with the virtual dynamics and statics events being scored together, as is done at the real-world FSUK, OBR would have placed 2nd overall, making us runners up for the third year in a row. A fantastic effort achieved from a field of over 80 competitors.

We'd also like to mention the immense pride we have for our Oxford Brookes Racing Autonomous Team which brought home the overall 1st prize, along with a slew of additional prizes.

However, it was Oxford Brookes University who secured the lion’s share of awards. Having made great progress since their first outing in 2019, the team took awards in for Simulation Development, DDT Class and Virtual Business Plan Presentation.

Virtual Statics: • Joint 6th for Design • 6th Business Plan Presentation • Tied 10th with 2 teams for Cost and Manufacturing

As it is our first year as a Class 1 electric team finishing 6th in Design is a huge achievement and provides a solid base for the team to improve on for the next competition season.

Virtual Dynamics: • 1st Assetto Corsa Sprint • 2nd LTS Skid pad • 15th DIL Sprint • 16th LTS Acceleration

It's such a pity we didn't get to test our drivers' skills in a real car but between the Lap Time Simulation events and the Sim racing, we believe OBR still showed its strength and competitiveness in the virtual environment.

Thanks for letting us join in and all the very best for 2021!
