Nicky Grist Stages so close for Rob Wilson Motorsport

Rob Wilson's report on Nicky Grist Stages

Rob Wilson didn’t make it out of the woods in his first forest race of the season @NGStages, but his post event report gives an insight into the level of strategic thinking required to tackle a gravel rally course.

Impressive start on Nicky Grist Stages 1-6 before disaster strikes

“It had been quite a weekend as far as getting the car ready for the event but despite all of the last minute prep, the car was solid and there on time.

“We started the first stage very cautiously, tried to get back into the flow and subsequently lost 10 seconds to the class leaders.

“We had a little bit of a discussion while in transit to the next stage and decided to push as hard as we could against the 208 R2 of Ioan Lloyd.

“Over the next couple of stages, we would build a class lead of 3 seconds going into the afternoon stages. We then conceded a few more stages but pushed as hard as we could on stage 7 to continue leading the class.

“Disaster struck on stage 7 where we sheared some bolts out the rear hub leaving the rear wheel to flap around and we had to stop. We were so close to winning but just couldn’t get there.

“Thanks to SPAL for the support.”

That is such a shame but as a rally driver, you get used to picking yourself up after a disappointment and word has it he ‘can’t wait to go again’ in September.
