Peak success for Adam Betteridge

Training in lockdown to reach the peak of Ben Nevis

Intrepid outdoorsman Adam Betteridge (SPAL BDM AM, Agriculture/Off-highway East) has triumphed over lockdown to train wherever and whenever he could to complete his Ben Nevis challenge over the weekend:

“I made it back in one piece, although the lower legs are feeling every stride of the ascent this morning.

“A really tough climb, although not our most difficult. We all agreed Scafell Pike is harder.

More challenges to follow Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is not for the novice so before setting out on Friday 4th September, Adam checked the lay the land.

“Weather is set fair (in Fort William at least) but this is mountain terrain and it can change in an instant. In fact, I remember we had 4 seasons in a day on Snowdon and Storm Freya on Scafell Pike last year, so we are used to the extremes.

“After setting off at 7 am, we made the summit in 3 hrs 30mins, only seeing a handful of walkers during the ascent with 20 people maximum at the summit, including us.

“We then descended, after a quick baguette, in just over 2 hours. We passed well over 300 people on the way down and celebrated with a well-deserved pint at the Ben Nevis Inn afterwards!

“I was blown away by the scenery up there. If only it weren't an 8-hour drive, I'd be up there most weekends picking off the peaks. We are already planning our next adventure. Looking more off the tourist tracks at the lesser walked peaks in the UK.”

That was good going, scaling 1,345 metres in that time. Well done Team Adam, let us know about your next quest!
