SPAL Automotive Scholarship Award for ’outstanding’ Harper Adams student

Harper Adams student Mitchell Porter-Keel is this year’s winner of the SPAL Automotive Scholarship, which was presented by Matthew Morris, Managing Director of SPAL Automotive UK in a special ceremony held at the University on 11th May.

The fourth year student on Harper Adams’ MEng Automotive Engineering (Off-Highway) course, was deemed by the judges to be outstanding in a field of exceptionally high quality candidates and, according to Matthew, Mitchell brought an impressive ‘real world’ perspective in his submission ‘How can cooling fans be used (in the agricultural sector) to reduce emissions to comply with Stage V legislation?’

As a leading designer and manufacturer of high-performance fans and blowers found on the kit of the major global agricultural OEMs, SPAL is finding its products increasingly specified in electric and hydrogen fuelled machinery.

The acceleration of the sector towards achieving net zero emissions is a current challenge for engineers, so SPAL posed the question to applicants for the scholarship how its products can contribute to reducing emissions in compliance with Stage V and Euro 6 regulations.

SPAL's proud association with Harper Adams University

Commenting on the Scholarship, Matthew said, “Meeting the environmental imperatives of reducing carbon is one of the great global challenges of our times and as manufacturers of thermal management systems for engines, we take our responsibilities very seriously.

In establishing this Scholarship, we look to the next generation of engineers for fresh ideas and new approaches to mitigating environmental impact. It is invariably inspiring to read submissions from Harper Adams candidates and a pleasure to be involved in the award process along with Head of Harper Adams Development Trust Doris Taylor and Head of Engineering Parmjit Chima.

We are very proud to be supporting and associated with one of the UK’s top agricultural universities.”

On behalf of Harper Adams, Head of Development Doris Taylor added, “The Development Trust at Harper Adams University is delighted to continue the partnership with SPAL, which is now in its third year. We enjoyed celebrating with Matthew Morris and Mitchell at our Scholarship Presentation, where they met in person for the first time.”

Mitchell will be visiting Worcester based SPAL Automotive UK in the near future to find out more about the latest developments in thermal technology from one of the world’s leading manufacturers.
