Engineering talent shines at Harper Adams Scholarship presentation

It’s official the sheer enthusiasm of Harper Adams students is uplifting. That’s according to SPAL Automotive MD Matthew Morris who attended the university’s annual scholarship presentation on Tuesday 17th May.

SPAL is one of over 70 organisations providing scholarships, this is its 4th year supporting the award-winning agricultural university and Matthew was pleased to attend the official handing over of the £2,500 bursary to outstanding student Elliot Lack, Year 2, MEng Mechanical Engineering.

“The event was brilliant as usual and I was once again dazzled by Elliot’s intelligence and excitement as we discussed his studies in robotics and autonomous vehicles and how he had worked on a project to develop an attachment to a robotic arm for the task of picking and placing items on a conveyor.

“It was fascinating to hear how the precision device developed for use in a food production or agricultural setting could also be applied in the medical sector which is exactly where Elliot will take up a placement later in the year to explore the world of autonomous surgery.”

Matthew also caught up with last year’s recipient of the exclusive SPAL Scholarship, Max Finch who has completed his degree and is about to join the army as an engineer.

“It was great to speak to Max again to find more about his next step and compare notes on how to resolve the engineering challenges encountered as all kinds of specialist vehicles are becoming bigger and heavier. While SPAL aims to develop bigger and more efficient axial fans for thermal management, Max’s job will be to overcome the issues around infrastructure being able to support the increased loads.”

“Well done once again to Elliot Lack who is a reminder of why SPAL offers the scholarship to encourage young talent. On a personal note, during a busy and difficult at week at work an afternoon at Harper Adams left me so uplifted by the positive energy arising from these two talented young men who have found their place in the varied and important field of engineering.”
