SPAL was delighted to hear from Emily Jones, engineering student and Harper Adams scholar now in her 5th and final year working on her MEng degree.
Having benefited from SPAL’s bursary awarded earlier this year, she is determined to overcome the challenges of online lectures and meetings to make the best of her time at university.
Turning her focus to tackling the key national and global engineering issues of the day as we move towards a low carbon future, she is basing her thesis around renewable energy.

Project aims to break the men’s cycling land speed world record
As keen cyclists at SPAL and being in the business of aerodynamics with our high performance engine cooling fans, we were very interested in a group project Emily is involved with run by Harper Adams to break the men’s cycling land speed world record.
Emily explains the approach:
“This group project involves us designing a canopy to be used behind a vehicle to create a vortex allowing a bike and rider to follow the vehicle. The world record attempt has the aim of reaching 200mph whilst the bike and rider follow the vehicle. This is a very exciting project and obviously creates a huge engineering challenge in designing a canopy large enough for the rider that will still allow the vehicle to reach over 200mph. It is really testing our simulation and time management skills, but I am very keen to remain involved in the project beyond the completion of the university module."
